Why Are Metal Badges Being Replaced With Embroidered Badges on Police Uniforms?

All police in the city that I live in, and surrounding areas, no longer wear metal badges on their uniforms. The badges are embroidered onto the breast of their uniforms. They started this within the last ten years, or so, and it may have become a statewide practice. Is this method being utilized elsewhere, and if so, does anyone know why?
